Grain mites are the hardest stored-product pest for a household to identify, because an individual mite is roughly the size of a speck of dust and sits right at the edge of what an unaided eye can resolve. What people usually notice first is not the animal at all but its effect: a fine tan-coloured dust across a pantry shelf, a bag of flour that has developed a faint sweet or minty smell, or a patch of what looks like spilled powder that turns out, under close attention, to be slowly moving. Mites need damp conditions to survive, so in Melbourne they concentrate in the parts of a home that stay humid, which is why a garage pantry, a laundry cupboard or a kitchen against an unventilated external wall so often turns out to be the source. What grain mites and flour mites actually are
The two species behind most Australian household cases are the flour mite, Acarus siro, and the mould mite, Tyrophagus putrescentiae, both recorded in the Atlas of Living Australia. Neither is an insect. Mites are arachnids, related to spiders and ticks and quite closely related to the house dust mite that lives in bedding, and an adult has eight legs, no antennae, no wings and no distinct head, thorax and abdomen.
An adult flour mite measures between about 0.3 and 0.6 millimetres, which puts a single animal at roughly the size of a grain of fine table salt. The body is a soft, pearly, translucent white to cream, the legs are pale pinkish-brown, and under magnification the body carries a covering of long fine hairs. The mould mite, Tyrophagus putrescentiae, is similar in size and appearance with noticeably longer body hairs, moves more quickly, and prefers foods with a higher fat and protein content along with anything already carrying surface mould.
Both species feed on the germ of grain, on flour and cereal products, on cheese, dried meats, dried fruit, pet food and birdseed, and on the microscopic moulds that grow on damp food. Their populations grow very quickly under the right conditions; a generation can complete in under two weeks in warm humid conditions, and numbers can climb into the hundreds of thousands in a single container of flour before anything is noticed.
How to identify an infestation you can barely see
The most reliable identification method is the moving-dust test, and it costs nothing. Take a small quantity of the suspect flour or grain, spread it thinly on a dark plate or a sheet of dark paper, leave it under a good light for a few minutes and watch closely. Mites are pale, so against a dark background their movement becomes visible even when the individual animals do not resolve properly, and the surface of the sample takes on a slow shimmering quality. The second sign is what pest managers call mite dust. As a population builds, cast skins, faecal material and dead mites accumulate as a fine tan or greyish-brown powder along shelf edges, in the join between shelf and wall, and around the base of containers. Wiping a finger across the shelf leaves a distinctly gritty smear, and where the population is heavy the dust develops a faint mounded texture as the mites move through it.
Smell is the third indicator and often the earliest. A heavily infested product develops a characteristic sweet, minty or faintly rotten odour, produced by the mites themselves, which is noticeable the moment a container is opened. Flour that smells wrong before it looks wrong is worth checking properly on a dark plate. Long-running infestations can also produce faint trails across a shelf where mites have travelled between containers.
Why humidity decides whether mites take hold
Grain mites cannot regulate their own water balance the way an insect can. They absorb moisture directly from the surrounding air through the body wall, and below roughly 60 to 65 per cent relative humidity they lose water faster than they gain it and the population dies out. This single fact governs everything about where mites appear and how they are controlled: they are a moisture problem attached to a food source.
Melbourne supplies the conditions readily in particular parts of a home. A pantry built against an uninsulated south-facing external wall, a laundry cupboard used for overflow food storage, a garage or shed where birdseed and pet food are kept, and any kitchen sitting above a damp unventilated subfloor all run persistently humid. Cool damp winter conditions with the house closed up are as favourable as warm ones, which is why grain mite calls come in through the year rather than clustering in summer the way weevil calls do.
Food moisture is the other half of it. Flour and grain that have picked up moisture from the air, opened packets left unsealed in a humid cupboard, and anything already carrying a bloom of surface mould are all substantially more favourable to mites than dry, sealed product. The presence of mould and the presence of mites go together often enough that finding one is good reason to look for the other, and both point to the same underlying condition in the room.
Grain mites or weevils? Telling them apart
The two get confused constantly, and the distinction changes what needs to be done. A weevil is an insect: hard-bodied, six-legged, two to five millimetres long, dark reddish-brown to black, with an unmistakable long snout, and it is comfortably visible to the naked eye. Weevils walk deliberately, play dead when disturbed, and the flying species turn up in rooms well away from the kitchen. A mite is an arachnid: soft-bodied, eight-legged, well under a millimetre, pale and translucent, and effectively invisible as an individual. Mites are only ever seen as a mass, appearing as dust that moves, and they stay in and immediately around the food. Their damage is surface feeding on flour, germ and mould rather than tunnelling into kernels, and they leave the tan mite dust and the sweet-minty smell that weevils never produce.
The practical difference is what has to change afterwards. Clearing a weevil infestation is about finding and removing the infested packets and treating the harbourage where adults shelter. Clearing a mite infestation requires the same source removal plus a genuine reduction in humidity, because leaving the damp conditions in place invites a fresh population into the next open packet within weeks. A property can carry both at once, and in a damp garage food store that is a common finding.
Health, food contamination and the allergen question
Grain mites do not bite people and they do not transmit disease. The health considerations are contamination and allergy. Heavily infested food carries mites, cast skins and faecal material through it, which is unfit to eat and should be discarded, and consuming it can cause the sort of gastrointestinal upset described by healthdirect.

How to keep grain mites out
Humidity control does most of the work. Improve ventilation in the room holding the food, run an exhaust fan in an adjoining laundry or bathroom so it vents outside, and consider a dehumidifier where a cupboard stays persistently damp. Where the kitchen sits above an unventilated subfloor, improving subfloor ventilation lowers the moisture load in the rooms above and is worth assessing as part of the fix. Avoid storing food in a garage or shed that has no moisture control at all.
Airtight hard-sided containers do double duty here. They keep mites out of clean product and they keep atmospheric moisture out of the food, which removes the condition mites depend on. Glass jars and rigid canisters with a proper seal are appropriate; paper, cardboard and loosely clipped bags are not.
Buy quantities that will be used within a few months, rotate stock so nothing sits at the back for a year, and clean up spilled flour and grain in shelf joins where a small damp deposit will sustain a population indefinitely. Why a clean-out on its own rarely holds
Throwing out the infested food and wiping the shelf reduces the population sharply, and where the problem is confined to one container in an otherwise dry cupboard it can be enough. The reason it so often fails is that mites are small enough to persist in places a cloth cannot reach: the join between the shelf and the cabinet carcass, the holes drilled for adjustable shelf brackets, the gap behind the kickboard and the seam of a benchtop. A surviving pocket of a few hundred animals in a damp cupboard rebuilds to a visible infestation within a month.
The larger issue is that a clean-out does nothing about the humidity that allowed the population to establish. Where a cupboard sits above a damp subfloor or against a cold external wall, the conditions that produced the first infestation are still present, and the next opened packet is colonised in short order.
