Summer. European wasps nest in ground cavities along the estate retaining walls and in wall voids, peaking through February. Mosquitoes lift after rain along the Plenty River and around the retarding basins and wetland reserves the estates are built with, which is why the houses backing onto them get noticeably more.
Autumn and winter. Rodents move in off the remaining paddock and open-reserve edges as the nights cool and the ground cover is cut or dries off. On the newer estates the entry is usually the garage, the weep holes or a service penetration, because there is very little roof access on a modern truss roof with sealed eaves.

Mernda is almost entirely 2010s-onward slab-on-ground brick veneer on small to medium blocks, with pockets of older rural-fringe property at the northern end towards the Plenty River.
