How to recognise the tiny jumping insects that mass in damp bathrooms and around new concrete, why they are not a health threat, and why moisture is the real answer.

Springtails arrive suddenly and in extraordinary numbers, which is what makes them alarming out of all proportion to the harm they do. A household will find thousands of tiny dark specks across a bathroom floor after a week of rain, a grey film of them floating on the surface of the pool, or a moving line of them along the base of a wall in a newly built home. The instinctive reaction is to assume fleas, and that assumption sends a lot of people looking for the wrong treatment. Springtails do not bite, they carry no disease, they cause no damage to a building, and they cannot live for long anywhere that is genuinely dry. Understanding that last point is the whole of the solution, because a springtail problem is a moisture problem wearing a disguise. How to identify a springtail

Springtails belong to the class Collembola, catalogued in the Atlas of Living Australia, and they are among the most abundant animals in soil anywhere on earth, with populations in healthy garden soil commonly running to tens of thousands per square metre. They are hexapods, closely related to insects and long classified among them, distinguished by mouthparts that are withdrawn into a pouch in the head. Nothing about that classification changes what to do about them; it simply explains why entomologists describe them slightly differently from a beetle or a fly.

An adult springtail is between about one and three millimetres long, soft-bodied and wingless, with six legs and short antennae. Melbourne species range from pale grey and cream through to slate blue, purplish and near black, and some carry a faint metallic sheen. Two body shapes are common: an elongated cylindrical form and a rounded, almost globular form that looks like a moving poppy seed. Neither has the hard, glossy, flattened body of a flea.

The definitive feature is the spring the animal is named for. A springtail carries a forked appendage called a furcula folded beneath the abdomen and held under tension by a small catch. Releasing the catch snaps the furcula down against the surface and flicks the animal into the air, often several centimetres and sometimes much further relative to its size, in a completely unpredictable direction. The movement is the giveaway: springtails scatter in a chaotic, popping burst when disturbed, with no steady walking or crawling in between, and individuals land facing every which way.

Why they mass-appear in bathrooms, pools and new homes

Springtails have very little capacity to hold water in and dehydrate within hours in dry air. They also take up water directly through a tube on the underside of the abdomen, which means they must stay in contact with damp material continuously. Every place they appear indoors is therefore somewhere holding moisture, and that single rule explains the whole pattern.

Heavy rain drives the outdoor influx. When garden soil, mulch and lawn become saturated, springtails leave the soil surface in enormous numbers looking for air, and they move toward the nearest sheltered damp surface, which is often a house slab edge, a paved area, a pool or a door threshold. A pool collects them by the thousand because the water surface traps them, and the skimmer box concentrates what the surface catches. Melbourne's wet late-winter and spring weeks produce most of these calls.

New homes are a category of their own. A freshly poured concrete slab holds a great deal of curing moisture and releases it slowly over many months, and new landscaping around a new build usually means fresh mulch, new turf and heavily watered garden beds hard against the building. That combination gives springtails everything they need, which is why owners of a house six or twelve months old so often describe a springtail problem that the previous owners of an established house down the street have never had. It resolves as the slab dries out and the landscaping settles, and it can be helped along considerably in the meantime.

Indoors, the recurring locations are bathrooms and ensuites, laundries, the base of shower walls, under kitchen sinks, around leaking or sweating pipework, in potted plant soil and along the perimeter of rooms above a damp subfloor. Persistent springtails in the same interior spot are worth treating as a moisture signal, because they very often lead to an unnoticed leak, a failed shower seal or a poorly drained subfloor.

What springtails eat and why they are usually a good sign outdoors

Springtails feed on decaying plant material, fungal threads, algae, bacteria and moulds. They are decomposers, and in a garden they are genuinely useful, breaking down leaf litter and mulch and helping to cycle nutrients back into the soil. A large springtail population in a garden bed indicates soil with plenty of organic material and good moisture, which is the condition most gardeners are aiming for.

Indoors the same diet points at a problem. Springtails found consistently inside a wall cavity, under a bathroom floor or behind a kitchen kickboard are feeding on mould and fungal growth, and mould growing inside a building means water is getting somewhere it should not. In that situation the springtails are the visible symptom of a moisture fault that will cause more expensive trouble than the insects ever would.

They do not eat timber, fabric, paper, food stores or building materials, and they do not damage plants beyond occasional minor grazing on seedlings in very high numbers. Nothing in a house is at risk from them structurally, which is worth knowing before deciding how much to spend on the problem.

Springtail or flea? Settling the most common mix-up

This is the misidentification we correct most often, and it is entirely understandable: both are tiny, dark and jump. The differences are clear once you know where to look, and they point to completely different treatments.

A flea is hard-bodied and glossy, dark reddish-brown, flattened from side to side so it appears narrow when viewed from above, and it is very difficult to crush between the fingers. Fleas jump powerfully using their legs, in a controlled arc, and they jump toward warmth and movement. Crucially, fleas bite, producing intensely itchy small red spots usually clustered around the ankles and lower legs, and there is almost always a cat, dog or previous animal occupant in the picture. A springtail is soft-bodied and matte, often grey, blue or purplish, rounded or cylindrical rather than laterally flattened, and it squashes readily. It jumps by releasing the furcula under its abdomen, which produces an erratic scattering burst in random directions with no arc and no aim. It does not bite, has no interest in people or pets, and appears in numbers around water, damp surfaces and mould. If dozens or hundreds are visible on a bathroom floor or a pool surface and nobody in the house has itchy bites on their ankles, it is a springtail. If someone is being bitten and the numbers are lower, treat it as a flea problem until proven otherwise.

One further check settles most cases: springtails appear in wet places and vanish from dry ones within a day or two, while fleas persist in dry carpet and bedding indefinitely because that is where their larvae develop. Springtails share their preference for damp, dark harbourage with several other insects, including the silverfish that turn up in the same bathrooms and subfloors, and finding both together is a strong indication that the property has a moisture issue worth investigating.

Are springtails harmful?

Springtails do not bite people or animals. They have no piercing mouthparts, no venom and no interest in blood, and they are not known to transmit disease. They do not infest hair or skin, they do not live on a person, and they do not damage buildings, furnishings, clothing or stored food. On the evidence, they are a nuisance and an indicator rather than a health hazard.

Some people report a crawling or prickling sensation on the skin during a heavy springtail appearance. In a large indoor population, fragments and debris in the dust can contribute to general irritation in the same way other insect-derived particles do, and the damp conditions producing the springtails frequently produce mould as well, which is a recognised trigger for some respiratory symptoms. What we would not do is tell you the springtails are biting you, because they are not equipped to. The genuine concern in a springtail case is what their presence indicates. A recurring indoor population means sustained dampness inside or beneath the building, and sustained dampness leads to mould, timber decay and conditions favourable to more damaging pests. Treating the springtails while ignoring the water gives a short result and leaves the real problem in place.

Moisture control is the actual fix

Everything that reduces dampness reduces springtails, usually within days, because the animals dehydrate quickly once conditions dry. Start with the obvious water: repair leaking taps, pipework and shower seals, clear blocked gutters and downpipes, and correct drainage where water pools against the house after rain. Ground that slopes toward the building, a garden bed built up against the slab edge and a downpipe discharging beside a wall are the three faults we find most often.

Pull damp material back from the building. Mulch, compost, leaf litter, firewood and dense low planting sitting hard against an external wall keep the slab edge permanently damp and give springtails a reservoir right at the entry point, so leaving a clear dry strip of at least a hand's width along the wall base makes a real difference. Water garden beds in the morning, and avoid irrigation aimed at the house.

Indoors, ventilate. Run bathroom and laundry exhaust fans and confirm they vent outside rather than into the ceiling cavity, open up damp rooms when the weather allows, and use a dehumidifier where a room stays wet through winter. Where the property has an unventilated subfloor, improving subfloor ventilation dries out the zone directly beneath the living areas and is the highest-value structural measure available on older Melbourne homes. Seal the gaps springtails use to get in: door thresholds, weep holes, the gaps around service penetrations and the join between slab and frame. When a professional treatment is worth doing

A short springtail appearance after heavy rain, confined to a paved area or a pool surface, usually needs nothing beyond the drying weather. Where treatment earns its place is in three situations: a persistent indoor population that keeps returning to the same room, a new-build slab releasing curing moisture where the household has to live with the property for the next twelve months, and a heavy sustained influx across a threshold or wall base that makes an area unusable.

In those cases a targeted treatment does real work. A residual barrier applied around the perimeter, at entry points, along the slab edge and into the harbourage in adjacent mulch and garden beds substantially reduces the numbers crossing into the building, and an interior treatment of the affected room's edges, wall voids and under-fixture spaces deals with what is already inside. What a treatment cannot do is keep a damp property free of springtails indefinitely. A barrier applied around a slab that is still wet, beside garden beds watered daily, will be repopulated from the soil once the residual expires.
