Carpenter Ants in Melbourne
The large ants that excavate timber to nest in it, how their damage differs from termites, and why finding them is usually a sign of a moisture problem.

Carpenter ants are the largest ants most Melbourne households will find indoors, and they cause a particular kind of alarm because they are found in timber and because the name suggests they eat it. They do not. Carpenter ants excavate galleries in wood to nest in, discarding the material rather than consuming it, which makes them structurally quite different from termites even though the two are often confused at first sight. The more useful thing to understand about them is what their presence indicates: carpenter ants overwhelmingly choose timber that is already damp, decayed or water-damaged, so a nest inside a wall, a window frame or a deck post is usually pointing at a moisture problem that was there first. What carpenter ants are, and which ones live in Melbourne
Carpenter ants belong to the genus Camponotus, a very large group represented across Australia by more than a hundred described species. The one Melbourne households encounter most often is the banded sugar ant, Camponotus consobrinus, recorded throughout south-eastern Australia in the Atlas of Living Australia and familiar to most Victorians as the big black ant with an orange-brown band around the abdomen that appears on paths and kitchen benches after dark.
Size is the first thing people notice. Workers in a Camponotus colony are polymorphic, meaning they come in a range of sizes within the same nest, from minor workers around 5 millimetres to majors reaching 15 millimetres or more with noticeably enlarged heads. That size range within one trail is itself a useful identification clue, because most other ants entering Melbourne homes are far more uniform.
Structurally they show the features that separate all ants from termites: a sharply narrowed waist, elbowed antennae with a distinct long first segment, and a smoothly rounded upper thoracic profile in Camponotus that is a recognised genus character. Carpenter ant damage compared with termite damage
This is the distinction to get right, because the two are handled completely differently and the financial consequences are not comparable. Carpenter ants excavate timber to create nesting galleries and push the excavated material out of the nest. Termites consume the timber as food. A carpenter ant colony can hollow a damp window frame or a deck post over years; a termite colony can compromise structural framing far more quickly and far more extensively.
The galleries look different on inspection. Carpenter ant galleries are smooth, clean and almost sanded in appearance, following the softer grain of the timber and often crossing the grain where decay has softened it. They are open, and there is no soil in them. Termite workings are the opposite: packed with mud, soil and faecal material, because subterranean termites carry the earth with them to maintain humidity, and the timber surface is left thin and blistered rather than clean.
What falls out of the nest is the clearest field test. Carpenter ants produce frass that looks like coarse sawdust or fine wood shavings, and mixed through it are recognisable insect fragments — discarded wings, legs and body parts of ants and of prey. It accumulates in small piles below the entry point, which is often a slit-like opening. Termite frass, where it appears at all, is quite different: drywood termite pellets are hard, uniform, six-sided and gritty, while subterranean termites produce no visible frass and instead build mud leads across surfaces.
If you find mud tubes, soil-packed timber or hard uniform pellets, you are looking at a termite problem rather than an ant one, and it needs a professional inspection promptly.
Why a nest indoors means a moisture problem
Carpenter ants can excavate sound timber, but they very strongly prefer wood that has already been softened by moisture or fungal decay, because it takes far less effort to work. In practice that means an indoor nest is almost always sitting in timber that is wet, and the ants are the visible symptom of a problem that started with water.
The places we find them in Melbourne homes follow that logic exactly. Window and door frames where sealant has failed and rain tracks into the reveal. Timber around a leaking shower recess or a bathroom with poor extraction. Deck posts and pergola uprights set into the ground or sitting on soil. Subfloor bearers and joists over a damp, poorly ventilated void. Fascia and eave timbers behind a gutter that has been overflowing for a season. Firewood stacked against the house, and old stumps or landscaping sleepers in the garden, are the usual outdoor reservoir.
This has a practical consequence for treatment. Killing the colony without correcting the moisture leaves the same attractive timber in place, and either the original colony re-establishes from a satellite nest or another one moves in. Where we find carpenter ants in a subfloor we will normally look at subfloor ventilation and drainage as part of the recommendation, because the durable fix is drying the timber out.
Parent nests, satellite nests, and why spraying a trail fails
Camponotus colonies are frequently organised as a parent nest containing the queen, the eggs and the young brood, plus one or more satellite nests holding older larvae, pupae and workers. The parent nest is usually outdoors in a tree, a stump, a retaining wall or buried timber, and it needs the damper conditions the queen and eggs require. Satellite nests can sit in much drier situations, which is how a colony ends up inside a wall cavity, a roof void or a door frame.
This structure is the reason a household can spray a visible trail repeatedly and achieve nothing durable. Removing foraging workers removes a small fraction of the colony, and the parent nest simply produces more. The workers seen indoors are frequently travelling between a satellite nest and an outdoor parent nest, so the ants on the kitchen bench may be nesting nowhere near the kitchen.
Proper treatment therefore starts with locating nests rather than treating trails. Foraging activity is heaviest after dark for most Camponotus species, so following trails at night is often the fastest way to find an entry point. Tapping suspect timber and listening for the hollow note, checking for frass accumulations, and looking for the slit-like gallery openings are the other standard methods. Once located, the nest is treated directly, and non-repellent products or baits that workers carry back into the nest are used so the colony is reached rather than scattered.
Do carpenter ants bite, and does it matter
They can bite, and a large Camponotus major has mandibles strong enough for it to be felt clearly. The bite is a mechanical pinch rather than a sting; carpenter ants do not have a sting the way bull ants do. Some Camponotus species can spray formic acid into the wound, which produces a sharper burning sensation that fades over minutes.
For most people the result is brief pain, a small red mark and nothing further, and it does not require treatment beyond washing the area and applying something cold. Ant bites and stings in general are covered by healthdirect, which is the appropriate first source for symptoms and first aid.
The important qualification is that any insect bite or sting can produce an allergic reaction in a susceptible person. Signs of a severe reaction — difficulty breathing, swelling of the face, lips or tongue, widespread hives, dizziness or collapse — are a medical emergency and warrant calling triple zero. That is uncommon with carpenter ants and considerably more associated with bull ants in Victoria, but the advice is the same regardless of which insect caused it.

Treatment begins with an inspection that has two aims: find the nest or nests, and find the water. We check the timber elements where nests establish — window and door reveals, wet areas, subfloor bearers and joists, fascia and eaves, decks, pergola posts, and any stored timber or stumps in the garden — and we use moisture readings to identify where the timber is wet and why.
The colony is then treated at the nest. Where a nest is accessible we treat it directly. Where it sits in a concealed void we use non-repellent products or baits that foraging workers carry back, so the treatment reaches the queen and brood rather than simply killing the workers on the surface and pushing the colony to relocate. Where the parent nest is outdoors in a stump, retaining wall or tree, that is treated too, because leaving it in place leaves the source intact.
The third part is the moisture, and it is the part that determines whether the problem returns. Correcting the leak, clearing the gutters, improving subfloor airflow, lifting firewood off the ground and away from the wall, and removing old stumps and buried timber all take away the conditions that made the property attractive. Where a subfloor cannot dry on its own, ventilation is the practical answer.

Do carpenter ants eat wood like termites?
No. They excavate timber to nest in it and push the material out, rather than consuming it as food. That is why their galleries are clean and smooth and produce coarse sawdust-like frass with insect fragments mixed through, while termite workings are packed with mud and soil. The structural consequences are also very different, and termites are by far the more serious of the two.
How do I tell carpenter ant damage from termite damage?
Look at what is in the galleries and what falls out. Carpenter ant galleries are open, smooth and clean, with piles of coarse frass containing recognisable insect parts below a slit-like opening. Subterranean termites pack their workings with mud and build mud leads across surfaces, and drywood termites leave hard six-sided pellets. Mud, soil or hard pellets mean termites and warrant a prompt inspection.
Why do I keep seeing them even though I spray the trail?
Because the trail is not the colony. Camponotus colonies often run a parent nest outdoors with satellite nests inside the building, so the ants on your bench may be travelling from a nest somewhere else entirely. Killing foraging workers removes a small fraction of the colony and the nest replaces them. Treatment has to reach the nest, which is why locating it comes first.
Does finding carpenter ants mean my house has a water problem?
Usually, yes. They strongly prefer timber softened by moisture or decay because it is easier to excavate, so an indoor nest is typically sitting in wet wood. Failed window sealant, a leaking shower, overflowing gutters, a damp subfloor and ground-contact deck posts are the common sources. Treating the ants without drying the timber tends to produce a repeat.
Are carpenter ants dangerous?
Not especially. They can bite and a large individual can be felt clearly, and some species spray formic acid which stings briefly, but there is no venomous sting and the usual result is a small red mark.
